Breaking Barriers Training and Mentorship Course 2025

The Roxy Davis Foundation’s 2025 mentorship & training programme is proudly supported by Laureus Sport for Good. The programme equips youth with skills, leadership, and ocean-based opportunities for impact.

Our Objective:  To increase opportunities for children and Young Persons with relevant, positive, soft and technical skills required to access employment. Focusing on employability equips young people with the skills needed to break cycles of poverty and unemployment. Investing in youth skills development has a direct impact on long-term economic growth, benefiting individuals and their communities.

Eligibility: Participants must be between 16-30 years and registered as a surfer/participant with the Roxy Davis Foundation (registration available after signing up).

COURSE 1

Become an Ocean Ambassador: This course Integrates personal development, environmental stewardship, and technical expertise, equipping participants with the tools to become confident, impactful communicators and advocates for change.

 

    • Relevant Skills: Environmental advocacy, storytelling, and public speaking tailored to diverse audiences.

    • Positive Skills: Confidence building, empathy, and resilience through mindfulness and self-expression.

    • Soft Skills: Teamwork, emotional intelligence, and giving/receiving constructive feedback.

    • Technical Skills: Speech structuring, language techniques, impromptu speaking, and nature-based experiential learning.

    • Includes many additional exciting opportunities such as sailing, canal paddle and clean up, an adventure to the aquarium, boulders beach and snorkeling!

 Surf Instructor Course: Trains young people for a recognized certification that can lead to employment opportunities, particularly  in coastal areas where surf instruction is in demand.

 

    • Relevant Skills: Ocean awareness, safety protocols, surf instruction techniques.

    • Positive Skills: Confidence-building, motivation, and empathy towards others.

    • Soft Skills: Communication, patience, and adaptability.

    • Technical Skills: Surfing proficiency, coaching methodology, group management, surfboard maintenance.

First Aid Course: First aid skills are highly valuable in the workforce and community, improving employability and promoting safety. This is particularly crucial for surf and ocean-based work.

 

    • Relevant Skills: Emergency response, CPR, injury assessment.

    • Positive Skills: Responsibility, calmness under pressure, care for others.

    • Soft Skills: Quick decision-making, teamwork, and attention to detail.

    • Technical Skills: CPR certification, wound care, handling trauma, using first-aid equipment.

Para Surfing Course & Disability Inclusion & Universal Access:

Provides inclusivity training, creating employment pathways within adaptive sports. This is especially relevant for youth with disabilities, encouraging broader access to ocean-based employment. Equips participants with knowledge and skills to make environments more inclusive, fostering diverse hiring and engagement. Disability inclusion also builds a more compassionate, capable workforce

 

    • Relevant Skills: Adaptive surf techniques, working with people with disabilities. Knowledge of disability rights, inclusive practices.

    • Positive Skills: Compassion, inclusivity, resilience, empathy, advocacy, and social responsibility.

    • Soft Skills: Patience, adaptability, sensitivity to individual needs, Interpersonal skills, cultural awareness, active listening.

    • Technical Skills: Adaptive surf equipment use, modified coaching techniques, mobility and support skills. Universal design principles, accessibility adjustments, adaptive communication methods

Train the trainer mentorship course to deliver disability inclusion training to volunteers and participants of the Roxy Davis Foundation. Training trainers to deliver inclusive practices multiplies the programme’s impact. This approach ensures the longevity of inclusive practices and builds leadership skills within communities.

 

    • Relevant Skills: Leadership in training, inclusive coaching techniques.

    • Positive Skills: Empowerment, role modelling, fostering inclusivity.

    • Soft Skills: Mentoring, public speaking, empathy, teamwork, quick decision-making, communication under stress

    • Technical Skills: Training design and delivery, accessible curriculum development, instructional techniques.
